How We Make Change

When we unionize, we gain something powerful: a seat at the table. Instead of navigating challenges alone—like asking for raises year after year—we come together as a united group to negotiate for fair working conditions, pay, and benefits. Here’s how the bargaining process works:

Step 1: Forming a Bargaining Committee

We start by rounding up volunteers to form a bargaining committee. This group will represent all workers during negotiations, and anyone can join. Whether you’re new to the studio or have been here for years, your voice matters. The more perspectives we have, the stronger our committee will be.

Step 2: Setting Our Priorities Together

As workers, we decide what’s most important in our contract. Everyone has opportunities to give input:

  • A bargaining survey will gather feedback on what matters most to you—raises, job security, health plan, work-life balance, or other priorities.

  • Regular email updates will keep everyone informed about progress.

  • Meetings and a ratification survey give us more chances to identify our priorities as a group.

Step 3: Negotiating with the Employer

With our priorities in hand, the bargaining committee negotiates with the employer. We’re supported by experienced IATSE representatives and labour lawyers and equipped with critical information about the company’s finances and operations, ensuring we know what’s possible.

Negotiations include employees from the bargaining committee, so the workers’ voices are always at the table. This is our chance to advocate for meaningful improvements to wages, benefits, and working conditions.

Step 4: Voting on the Final Contract

Once the bargaining committee reaches a tentative agreement with the employer, every union member gets to vote on the final draft of the contract. The contract only takes effect if a majority of workers vote to approve it.

This ensures that the final deal reflects what we, as workers, want.

Why This Matters

The bargaining process gives us more control over our working conditions. No more going it alone or feeling unheard when asking for a raise or better hours. Together, we’ll negotiate a fair contract that works for all of us.

This isn’t just about having a voice—it’s about using that voice to build a better workplace and a brighter future for everyone at 9Story.
